Laura Sampson

Hello

I’m a London-based Storyteller, performance maker and published author.  I tell stories –
folktales, myths, legends and more – for adults, children and all-ages family audiences.

My storytelling style is rhythmic, musical, immersive, sometimes funny,
occasionally poetic. In my work with children and families, I encourage
audiences to participate and have fun helping to build the world of
the story alongside me. With adult audiences, I create a space where
people’s imaginations can ‘wake up’ and follow my words and images.

Sharing stories and lore is one of the most ancient, empowering human
activities there is. A storyteller’s words literally become worlds in a
listener’s imagination: I’m privileged to be part of that two-way process.

I’m inspired by many things, but especially the work of performers whose
‘stand-up storytelling’ work showcases the ancient oral tradition of
storytelling as a live, mental image-fuelled contemporary art form.

Take a look around to learn more about the stories I tell, who to,
where to find me, and how to get in touch.

background

I grew up in South East London, where reading, telling and making up stories was my whole world. I also heard stories from Trinidad & Tobago (where my dad is from), Yorkshire and Wales (where my mum’s family is from).

I studied literature at UCL, specialising in Medieval English and Old Norse poetry.

After graduating I worked in publishing before moving on to study voice and performance storytelling.

Along the way, I’ve also promoted events, helped theatre designers, booked tours, sold books, and edited other people’s writing.

I am currently studying for a MA in Japanese Noh theatre, myth and traditional stories at SOAS, University of London.

Whenever I can, I continue to study with performers and practitioners whose work I admire, which inspires me to continue developing my own practice.
